Water flow velocity

Water flow velocity is the rate at which the water passes a certain spatial point. In an open river the water flow velocity equals the volume of water transported per time divided by the used area in the river bed. In soils and sediments the area through which the water flows is also occupied by stationary soil or sediment particles. Hence, here water flow velocity takes into account porosity: the ratio of free space between the soil or sediment particles to the total space.
