Some particles (such as nZVI) are very reactive and therefore transform quickly in the environment. It is difficult to quantify single processes, and more practical to use a simplified model relying on macroscopic descriptors (retardation factor and 1^st order removal rate) that scale conservative tracer transport to NM transport.
